Fundraising for the Avon Walk in Annette's name...

Breast Cancer is a bitch.  I have had entirely too many people I know effected by it, now one has been taken from this earth way too soon.  Annette Stefaniak, a friend, a customer, a wife, a mother to 3 beautiful children, succumbed to breast cancer on January 6, 2015.  Some of her friends in California were unable to physically help her or her family in Michigan, and we were requested to NOT raise funds.   We listened.

However, Rebekah Hosford, who knew Annette through the San Diego Real Diaper Circle, made a commitment to participate in the Avon Walk to End Breast Cancer in Annette's name.  She's been pushing her big double stroller with two of her three children training for this 39 mile walk.  Along with the training is the fundraising.  Rebekah has contacted lots of companies for some fabulous donations, and she has an auction set up over on Por el Amore de - the blog I started when I first learned of Annette's battle.  Now we get to use it for what it was created for.

Head on over, check out what's listed.  You'll need to create an account on Por el Amore de to bid, but it's mostly just for your email address so we can contact you when you win.  Then please, please share it with your friends.

Peace & Love...

Rachel D.

Annette left us a wonderful review on our Facebook page just before she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer.

Speaking Up - possibly a series?

The other day, I was shown some screenshots of a conversation.  The conversation was not nice at all.  And it was allowed to continue on over 100+ comments.  It was mean.  It was ugly.

It hurt me, even though I was not mentioned (to my knowledge) directly in the comments.  It was hard to not take it more personally, but I was able to pull my big girl britches up, and shake it off.

Not everyone can.

What was bothersome the most to me, was that this hurtful conversation was made by mothers.  Mothers with babies.  We usually hear about cyber-bullying on the news from horrific incidents about teenagers.  I'm starting to wonder where these teenagers are learning this cyber-bullying behavior from.  It's not so much that they are being taught TO bully, but they are visualizing this daily on the internet.  Being shown that it is fun and okay to mock other people who are not there to defend themselves.  It's not okay.

Now, you may say, "it wasn't cyber-bullying because it wasn't about you!"  True that it wasn't about me personally, but it was still bully behavior, unkind, and had zero purpose - about something that I care about.  The only thing it did was reinforce a violent environment with the idea that that behavior was completely acceptable.

The real problem for me...is this behavior spills out from that conversation or aggressive environment.  It infiltrates other conversations and peaceful environments.  These mothers have been applauded for poor behavior when others have joined them, so they now feel superior to those who think differently.  This is not okay.  And I will not stand for it.  I will not allow this type of behavior to infiltrate peaceful conversations.

I encourage everyone who engages in any type of conversation to look in to Non Violent Communication(aff. link).  It can be life changing with how you communicate with those around you.  From other parents on the internet, your child's teacher, your doctor, and yes, even your in-laws or exes, you too, can learn to communicate with purpose AND kindness.

I do have more to say about this topic, as this behavior and now lies, are continuing.  But for now, these things need to be said.

Until next time...

Make a reConnection in 2015

Recently, I had a conversation with a mentor on a professional level which turned out to be a personal one, too.  I came to the conclusion that I am indeed a very social being.  I thrive best when I am surrounded by people.  I love working with people, helping them fulfill their needs, reach their goals.  Unfortunately, I find myself locked in my house, tending to 'life'.  Squeezing in time for Rock Easy Diaper Co. every chance I can get.  But communicating from this side of the computer screen is far from fulfilling for me.  I need to see people in person, build personal relationships with the community, with you.

So, I'm making a plan, that starting 2015, REDC will have one disconnected day a month, maybe called the "Day of Disconnect to Reconnect".  I will take my kids to the park, hoping that you will join us for fun, conversation, and building lifelong friendships.

What do you think?  Could you 'disconnect' for a day for play time?

Peace, Love, Cloth Diapers, BabyWearing...and reConnections in 2015!

Exciting news from Rock Easy!

As of yesterday, Rock Easy is now a Share the Love host!  More details will come to us over the next few days, but in the meantime you can follow Share the Love on Facebook or find more information on their website.

A little about Share the Love:

"Share the Love is a national cloth diaper bank that works to achieve one goal:
eliminate diaper need and poverty in our local communities.
Founded in 2012 by Cotton Babies CEO Jennifer Labit, Share the Love provides cloth diapers to low-income families.
With a growing network of host sites operated by volunteers who want to make a difference, Share the Love has become a nationally accessible program with more than 100 locations nationwide.
Through education, resources and support, Share the Love does more than just distribute diapers. It teaches people about the underlying effects of poverty such as diaper need. It enables more parents to provide their babies with clean diapers. It allows a family to buy better meals, pay a bill and save for the future. But most importantly, Share the Love provides hope to those who need a caring, helping hand.
Make a difference in your neighborhood."

What is Rachel doing NOW?!

When I first set out to bring cloth diapering goodness to my local community, I never imagined I would soon be participating in the Real Diaper Association as a Circle Leader and Board Member!

But now, I have another organization I am proud to be a part of!  I am now a Board Member (At-Large) for the Real Diaper Industry Association!  I am grateful to Abbie from Mom's Milk Boutique for the nomination to join the RDIA Board.  This is an amazing opportunity to work with and learn from other industry leaders on how best to reach out to cloth diapering parents like you.

I look forward to working with experienced cloth diaper manufacturers like Dennis Frederick of OsoCozy and Charlene Foster of Tiny Tush; and retailers like Abbie from Mom's Milk Boutique and Sara of Ju-Ju Monkey, so we can improve our industry to support your cloth diapering experience!

What would you like me to learn to help you?

Peace, Love, and Cloth Diapers!

Help! How do I begin cloth diapering my baby?

There are many reasons why parents choose to cloth diaper their baby, some may include:
  • Financial
  • Rash/Skin Issues
  • Waste Reduction
  • Smell Reduction
  • Searching for a more adorable option
  • and each family may have more personal reasons as well!
Sometimes it's best to try to figure out WHY you want to cloth diaper, and I can help you determine the right path.  For example, a family looking to reduce their diapering costs, might want to look at flats and prefolds (or if they have an abundance of old t-shirts, and then they would just need the waterproof outer, a cover).  I can usually get a family cloth diapering for around $100 - $150 from birth to just about potty training, choosing simple prefolds and inexpensive covers.

A family looking to reduce rashes, may prefer to a)make sure there is a stay dry lining between the baby and absorbent part of the diaper or b)eliminate the synthetic materials entirely from the diaper so that baby's bottom has more air flow.  Option A can be achieved with many types of diapers, mainly pockets and AIO(all in ones), or by adding a microfleece liner to a natural fiber diaper.  Option B is easily remedied by choosing natural fiber diapers, most styles of cloth diapers can come with natural fiber inners.  An added 'breathable' option would be to choose a wool cover instead of a PUL (polyurethane laminate) cover or shell.

Waste and smell reduction can be eliminated with just about any choice of cloth diaper.  But the first two reasons I mentioned, I've noticed that those are the most likely reasons a family might need to make the switch.  Of course, some of us - and I won't name names...ahem, just choose cloth diapers because they are so cute!  Well, the stink elimination was a HUGE bonus for my husband, so that was a win!

So - final thought - decide your reason why you want to cloth diaper, then we can go full force with the best option to suit your family.  I want you to be successful!  If you are local to the San Diego County area, and need some personal consultation time, sign up here.  For a low cost of $15, I will help you find the right options for you.  The $15 is returned to you in store credit for your first purchase!

Why I joined the Real Diaper Association

When I first started cloth diapering back in 2008, I found the local community lacking support.  Sure, there were two local retailers.  But one was small and not set up for support or the best customer service, and the other was far from me and did not have the customer service or selection I was seeking either.  Of course I had online blogs and parenting forums like good ol' BabyCenter, but found there was lots of conflicting information and not to mention the Pampers debacle(which added to my ban on Proctor & Gamble products ever entering my home!) So, Google and I became BFFs.

Quickly, I found the San Diego Real Diaper Circle led by Heather McNamara, the Executive Director at the time for the Real Diaper Association.  It was a small Yahoo! group of a little over 100 people if I remember correctly(SDRDC is now on Facebook with over 1300 members).  I was shy and didn't post much, but read up on what they talked about, and finally got the nerve to drive down 45 minutes for a meeting at the old Java Mama location.  It was a little chaotic and and maybe even 'clique-y' at first, but Heather was very warm and inviting and helped me feel 'at home'.

I had only been cloth diapering for a short time, but looked further into the Real Diaper Association to see what I could do to help.  After all, I was bored with my new found role as SAHM, I needed something more.  Then, I saw it.  I could become a LEADER!  That was perfect for me.  I felt confident in my choice to cloth diaper my son (after all it was easy peasy lemon squeezy!), and was ready to take on the search for more evidence based information and share it.  I signed up, paid my dues, and the ball was rolling.  Soon, Heather contacted me for my first volunteer interview to make sure I was a good match to represent the organization.  She felt confident that I was and advised me on the next step, which was to read the book NonViolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg.  That is a MAJOR part of becoming a RDA Circle Leader.  It is very important for each leader to read, and re-read this book so that we can communicate compassionately and be heard.

I'll be honest, I read the book quickly, but I'm terrible at writing (can you tell!?)  So I struggled with the workbook assignment to go along with it.  It was a while till I was 'officially' accredited by the RDA, but I was hosting classes for the RDA spreading the message in a 'NVC' way.  Heather saw that, and took it to the Board of Directors asking for me to be accredited anyway.  They agreed, and I've been promoting RDA since.

In the beginning of 2013, I was asked to join the Board of Directors for the Real Diaper Association.  Having never been on a Board before, I was hesitant because I wasn't sure of the responsibility of a Board Member.  I could only imagine what I saw in the movies with big tables and presentations, and my biggest fear...pant suits.  HA!  The RDA is far from that, we communicate online, conference calls, and my favorite, Google Hangouts.  We are comfortable in our street clothes, work clothes, and don't tell anyone else, my pajamas!  We work toward finding evidence based information about cloth diapering, talk about fundraising opportunities like the Great Cloth Diaper Change and School of Cloth, and discover ways to inspire volunteers.

This year, the Real Diaper Association is celebrating it's 10th year!  How exciting is that!?  I'm proud to be a part of this organization, and am thankful for all that it has taught me.  From communicating in a compassionate way, from respecting evidence based information, to realizing my own passions - even finding my own hang ups so I can work on those, too!

Please join the RDA and help us promote cloth diapering!  Read the RDA Mission statement here:  http://www.realdiaperassociation.org/mission.php

How and why, did Rock Easy Diaper Company begin?

Recently, I was given a task to reconnect with why I started Rock Easy Diaper Company.  And I thought in honor of celebrating our 5 year anniversary, I needed to tackle it NOW.  I've thought a lot about this the past week and it comes down to...

You.

I love giving guidance and encouragement to you on cloth diapering.  I love teaching you the benefits of choosing cloth diapers.  I love showing the amount of money you can save with a simple diapering choice.  I also love showing off new products that are Made in the USA, because that is important to me.

I love giving (and receiving) hugs from fellow moms who may (or may not be) struggling with parenthood.  I love knowing that there is a world of moms (and dads) out there that are crossing the same bridge I did last week, or already crossed a street I am about to.  We can all share our experiences and learn from them.  I love that REDC has given me these opportunities for personal growth.  I would not have this without...

You.

And you.  And you over there.

It comes down to REDC wasn't ALL about cloth diapers when we started.  It was about community, personal interactions, meeting new people, making more friends (oh how I have!), educating new parents, and yes, giving hugs.  I love to give hugs!

I want you to know I care about you and your family.  That's what REDC is all about.

I hope the next few years I will meet more of you.  Just don't be worried when I move in for a hug!

Peace, Love, and Cloth Diapers~

Friday Question ~

I came across this question in my Klout account...how would YOU answer it?

"What is the best reusable diaper that is affordable and does a good job? Is the hassle worth the cost and environmental benefit?"

My answer:  The best affordable diaper (if looking for mass produced) would be a prefold or a flat, paired with a reusable cover.  Inexpensive, customizable and sturdy.  A tried and true option.  If one is looking for an easy convenient option (similar to a single use throwaway design) then something like an AIO(all in one; Simplex, Freetime, etc) would fit the bit, although would be more expensive initially.

Yes, choosing and using cloth diapers is absolutely worth the extremely minimal hassle you may encounter(although problems can arise if one is using the wrong soap, too much/too little soap, improper washing techniques, etc).  Cost savings may near ~$2000 and the environmental benefit of keeping 2 TONS of trash and human waste out of landfills can make one feel warm and fuzzy(not to mention keep chemicals away from our childrens' sensitive bits, preventing our homes from stinking like dirty diapers, numerous trips to the store because you only have 2 diapers left!)

Personally, having used both throw away diapers (first 10 months of my oldest's life) and subsequently using cloth diapers for the remainder of his diapering days and from birth on his younger brother, I can honestly, whole heartedly say to anyone - that cloth diapers should be the first option and ANYONE can do it.  Even if you don't have access to a washing machine...or don't have the funds for that initial investment, it's still totally possible.  Will it require a bit of work?  Yes.  Will it be worth it?  Absolutely!

Thirsties Duo All in One Giveaway!

Many know that I'm working towards having a majority of the products at Rock Easy Diaper Co. made in USA, or at least North American made.  I'd like to celebrate that with one of my favorite Made in USA companies - THIRSTIES!  A little about Thirsties:

"We are very proud of the fact that all Thirsties products are manufactured in Colorado, USA, by a group of very talented individuals, many of whom are moms who work in the comfort and convenience of their own homes. With your support, we are able to employ more staff each year, helping to support more families in our local community."

And that right there, is why I am working on my goal.  It is what I strive for as well, but am not quite there yet!

Why buying USA made products is important to me:

CPSIA Compliance - Thirsties is ensuring that your babies are safe and free from harmful substances.  There are American companies that make sure the testing is done on their imported products, however there are many cloth diaper manufacturers that ship their product from China straight to the end user - no testing is done!  How can you be sure your baby is safe?

Warranty - Thirsties stands behind their product!  I can attest to that as a customer as well as a retailer!  One of the reasons I love them so much!

Thirsties can you help you determine how many cloth diapers you need - or how much you are saving with their calculator!

Now, without further delay...

Visit www.rockeasy.co and tell me what your favorite color Thirsties Duo AIO is!  Leave that comment here on the blog and that counts as your entry in the Rafflecopter App!
